PONTYPOOL, South Wales, 22nd June 2017 – Pontypool RFC is pleased to announce that Matthew Jones and Andrew Quick will continue to lead the club’s backs division when the new WRU National Championship campaign commences in September.
Since both joining Pooler twelve months ago, Jones and Quick have revolutionised the intensity of the club’s backs strategy in their respective roles of backs coach and defence coach.
Under their leadership, Pooler amassed an incredible 803 points and 114 tries on its way to clinching the WRU National Championship in emphatic fashion. This represented an increase of 9 points and 5 tries despite playing four games less in the newly restructured division.
Speaking on behalf of the dynamic-duo, defence coach, Quick, expressed his delight at the prospect of continuing Pooler’s progress as the club seeks to defend its Championship crown.
“Both myself and Matthew are honoured to expand on the improvements we have made as a team and we are really excited about continuing to work with head coach, Leighton Jones,” he said.
“After a successful first season as a partnership, we have learnt a great deal about the dynamics of the team and what must be done to ensure we continue to develop throughout this prolonged period where the club has no opportunity to gain promotion to the Premiership division.
“We are fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such a great squad of players who have all bought into the environment and that is vital to the success of any ambitious sports team.
“We are still a very young coaching outfit, but we are incredibly committed to continuing to grow as a unit and further improve the solid foundations that were laid last year.
“It is vital that we perform even better than last season so that when the promotion season arrives, we are ready to finish the job and take Pooler back to the Premiership.”
