Monday 22nd October 2018

It is with sadness that the club announces the passing of former full back Robin Williams. Our thoughts are with Robin’s daughter Cara, family and friends during this very difficult time.

Robin John Williams was born at Govilon on 11 February 1950 and was educated at Abersychan Technical School. He represented Welsh Secondary Schools and played for Cardiff College of Education, Cardiff, Newport and Wales B before making his debut for Pontypool against on 1 December 1973 in the 34-3 home win over the RAF. He made 50 appearances for the club in 1974-75, the season he was Player of the Year, and amassed 517 points, then a Welsh club record. His points were made up of 16 tries (4 points a try), 78 conversions, 96 penalties and 3 drop goals. Robin left for Italy in 1975-76 to play for Brescia but returned the following season, scoring 395 points in 41 games. In his 117 appearances for the club, he scored 1158 points. He played in the Gwent team that beat the South Africans on their controversial tour of 1969-70 at Ebbw Vale, kicking 3 penalties and a conversion. Robin sadly died on 18 October 2018.
