Pontypool RFC were victorious in the Lesotho 7’s rugby tournament held at Blackwood Rugby Club on Saturday May 17th after defeating Blackwood RFC in the bowl trophy final.
Pooler did well to turnaround from agonisingly close defeats to Cardiff Met RFC and Cross Keys RFC in the initial pool stages by claiming victory against Bargoed RFC and latterly Blackwood RFC in the final match.
Emily Buckley, who supported Pontypool RFC’s participation in the tournament along with Mike Hook and the wider coaching team, said: “We are delighted to come away from the Lesotho 7’s tournament with some silverware and it was a fantastic occasion. It was a great day in the sun and the boys persevered through some very hot conditions to achieve something great for this club. It really does cap off what has been a tremendous season for Pontypool RFC.”
The Lesotho 7’s is an innovative and pioneering Rugby 7’s tournament that aims to build on one of Wales’ strongest international partnerships with Southern African country Lesotho to develop Rugby and health education in that country.
Held in the Gwent Valleys town of Blackwood in South Wales, the tournament ran from Monday May 12th – Sunday May 18th and included 7’s tournaments across all age groups and an International Rugby Conference, bringing the Rugby World to the Valleys.
Congratulations to the team that played in the tournament!
