Pontypool RFC is pleased to confirm the signing of Newport RFC winger Mathew Powell, who featured for the club at the back end of last season.
Powell started the victory over Cardiff Met RFC on the final day of last season and has now completed a permanent move to Pontypool Park.
Another player who started out at Pontypool United RFC, Powell has gone on to star for Cross Keys RFC, Cardiff RFC and most recently Newport, where he bagged seven tries in 13 games.
The 27-year-old will compete with Marcus Jones, Amosa Nove, Duan Thomas and fellow new arrival Deon Smith to spearhead the attack from the flanks.
The attacker said: “I’m really excited to have signed for my home town club.
“I cannot wait to get started with a massive season and a chance of promotion.”
Defence coach Andrew Quick is pleased to finally secure the signature of a player the club has tracked for a while.
“We are finally delighted to welcome Mathew Powell to Pontypool RFC, it has taken a few years to ensure his talent is applied to his home town, we are so pleased to see him come on board,” he said.
“As a club we always look to develop and recruit the best local players and to finally get Mathew here after plying his trade for other top outfits is a real coup.
“Being a local lad he already comes with established relationships within the squad and I look forward to watching him forge great combinations on the field.
“He has shown through his playing career he is a top-end finisher of tries, he’s hitting his peak years and will offer a great deal to this group of players.”
