Pontypool RFC has been drawn against Narberth RFC in the opening round of the WRU Championship Cup.
The WRU has revamped the format for cup competitions this season creating an additional two trophies, giving even more teams the chance to play at the Principality Stadium and fight for honours.
The WRU Premiership Cup and WRU Championship Cup, which replaced the WRU National Cup last season, have been kept but the Plate, Bowl and Shield competitions have been scrapped in favour of separate cups for each of the five divisions.
All of the other cups begin with a group-stage format, however, the Championship Cup is a straight knock-out system with Pooler travelling to the Lewis-Lloyd Ground on 15th October 2022 with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
This will be the club’s first cup tie in two-and-a-half years since a comprehensive 45-0 victory over Pontypool United RFC in the Ben Francis Cup in February 2020. Pooler last featured in the National Cup a month earlier, narrowly losing to Indigo Premiership outfit Carmarthen Quins RFC.
Holders Neath RFC and Ystrad Rhondda RFC have been given byes and will enter the competition at the last-eight stage.
