We are delighted to announce that 3 of our most respected players graduate into coaching roles for the coming season.
Scott Matthews will pick up responsibilities as Defence Coach whilst Kelvyn Williams will impart his wisdom as Scrum Coach. Both will combine these roles whilst remaining key members of our playing squad.
Scotty added I’m eager to work closely with the management team and will aim to continue the development we’ve made in the past year since our return to the Premiership. This new role presents an exciting opportunity for me to contribute both on and off the field and I look forward to many more incredible moments with the Pooler army in this next chapter.
Kelvyn said ‘I didn’t fully understand the full aura around the club until I joined 2 years ago but I now really feel the history of the club with the greats of the game who’ve worn the shirt before me. The level of support we get from the Pooler army is immense and unlike anywhere I’ve experienced elsewhere and I’ve got to meet some brilliant people here.
I can’t wait to start coaching as the scrum is my favourite part of the game and it’s obviously always been one of our key strengths. There’s nothing better than tussling with the opposition pack and it’s really exciting to work with the boys and obviously we’ll aim to dominate at scrum time.
Ashley Sweet retires from playing and steps into a management role as Forwards Coach. He represented Pontypool and Ebbw Vale with distinction for 13 years having also played for Dragons, Cardiff, Cross Keys and Pontypool United Youth.
Ash said ‘I feel that now is the right time for me to retire from playing. Rugby has given me great opportunities, friendships & memories that will last a lifetime. As one chapter ends another one begins and I am truly honoured that Leighton & Peter have asked me to stay on and coach the forwards. I’m a Pontypool boy and to represent my hometown club continues to be a privilege that I cherish. I look forward to working with the talented group of players and coaches we have here and continuing the hard work to reach our full potential.
Leighton Jones added ‘All 3 boys have been fantastic for us and are already seen as leaders by the boys in the squad so I expect all to step up really easily. Special mention for Ash, who’s hung up his boots – He’s been an absolute warrior for us and he’ll be a tough act to follow given his performances were excellent over the past few seasons but he’ll add a new dimension to our pack for sure with his knowledge of the game.
