Shaun Connor believes rotation will play a key part in any success Pontypool RFC have this season with the club making 10 changes for the visit of Trebanos RFC tomorrow afternoon.
Pooler have started the season in fine form picking up maximum points from their opening three games.
And backs coach Connor believes for that to continue the club will need to use their squad depth throughout the campaign.
Only five members of the team – Ashley Sweet, Ieuan Jones, Matthew Jarvis, Amosa Nove and Deon Smith – that edged past Neath RFC have kept their places in the team.
There are debuts for Aneurin Jenkins and Dai Langdon, Adam Stratton is involved for the first time this season while full-back Geraint Walsh makes his return from injury.
Young winger Ewan Rosser makes his first start and it will be a special day for captain Mikey Herbert, who will make his 50th appearance for the club.
“We’ve tried to freshen things up this week,” explained Connor.
“The boys have trained well for a long time now so it’s a good chance to give players an opportunity but also to give boys who have played a lot of rugby a bit of a down week.
"That’s the only way we are going to get promotion, if we have a strong squad and give them all game time.
“For us to be successful and to achieve our aims this year we have to be able to rotate the squad and give people game time.
“We’re not going to be able to pick the same 15 all season so it’s a little bit horses for courses.
“The boys coming in are quality players and they’ve got to match what the boys have done in the past three league games and hopefully take it to a new level if they can.”
Connor is predicting a different, but still difficult, test from Trebanos when they visit Pontypool Park and is hoping to see an improvement in discipline.
“Neath RFC were probably a little bit more physical and direct,” added Connor.
“From what I’ve seen from Trebanos they are quite a young team and like to play with a bit of width so it’s a different challenge.
“The reason we were under so much pressure last week with our maul defence was our discipline.
“I think we conceded 22 penalties and you’re always going to struggle to win games if you give that many penalties away.
“Neath had about 10 opportunities to maul us from five metres out and it wore us down in the end.
“That’s not the game we want to play so we have to make sure we are on top of our discipline.”
