Pontypool RFC travel to Glamorgan Wanderers RFC tomorrow afternoon in the WRU Admiral National Championship with last weekend’s below-par performance still fresh in their minds.
Pooler secured a last-gasp victory over Ystrad Rhondda RFC last time out courtesy of a last-minute penalty try.
That ensured they continued their perfect record this season with maximum points but Shaun Connor insists the squad know they need to vastly improve at the Memorial Ground.
“We all know we didn’t play as well as we can,” said backs coach Connor.
“I think we’ve got to give Ystrad Rhondda a lot of credit.
“They came with a game plan, they disrupted how we wanted to play but they also played to a good level so I think they should take more credit than they have been given.
“It’s certainly put a focus on our training this week, the boys are in no uncertain terms that they need to go out on Saturday and put in a better performance.
“The last thing we can do is underestimate Glamorgan Wanderers.
“They are a very well-coached team, a young team very similar to Ystrad Rhondda so I’m sure they will come out full of energy and buoyed by the Ystrad Rhondda game and will feel they have a chance against us.
“For us it’s about being better than we were last week and if we get certain areas of our game right then I think the result will take care of itself.”
The coaches have made wholesale changes with 10 players brought into the side.
Captain Scott Matthews is the only man to keep his place among the forwards while Deon Smith and Ewan Rosser come in to add threat on the wings.
Joel Mahoney returns at centre to partner Pat Lewis, who will make his 50th Pooler appearance.
“We are quite fortunate that we have the ability to make changes,” added Connor.
“When you’ve got that strength it would be remiss of us not to make changes after a bad performance.
“If we are going to drive standards then people need to have opportunity but they also need to realise with that comes a level of expectancy and that they need to take that opportunity.”
