Marc Thomas is looking to make a fast start this weekend when North Walian outfit RGC 1404 come to Pontypool Park.
This will be the first encounter between the two this season following December’s postponed fixture, which is now scheduled for April 27th.
After a blip in results, Pooler have rediscovered their early campaign form with back-to-back bonus-point victories over Bridgend Ravens and Neath while they also took a bonus point from their defeat to high-flying Llandovery.
In total, they have won three of their last four while opponents RGC have lost seven of their last eight. Although, they have been competitive and picked up four losing bonus points in that run.
With eyes firmly on the top four, prop Thomas is aware Pooler cannot afford to slip up in their pursuit of Cardiff and has admitted the team need to stop with recent slow starts.
“That is a habit we are trying to get rid of because we are putting ourselves under a lot of pressure,” he said.
“Last weekend, we were better. Bridgend did score first but we adapted quickly afterwards.
“It is something we need to stop doing because at this level you will get punished.
“We respect every team we play. RGC have had close results and are not a bad side.
“We’ll stick to our basics with our forward play and need to make sure we do what we do well.
“Everyone is clear on what our target is and if we can get another five points then it puts pressure on Cardiff.
“All we can do is the best that we can and finish as high as possible.”
Thomas has featured five times since his integration into the team and is relishing the competition for places.
“I’ve really enjoyed it,” he said.
“It suits my style of rugby. We are a team that works hard with a good forward pack.
“There are two other good looseheads so it has been good to have that competition.
“The boys take pride in their set piece and hopefully I’ve come in and added to it.
“We’re trying to move the ball more, which is good.
“Everyone seems to be enjoying their rugby and, obviously, we are winning.
“All we can do is our best and keep pushing for fourth spot.”
