Scott Matthews will continue as Pontypool RFC captain for the upcoming season.
The back row has been a vital figure for the club ever since his arrival from Cross Keys in the summer of 2018.
He bagged 10 tries in 19 appearances in his first campaign at Pontypool Park, helping the club to an unbeaten Championship title.
Matthews was then handed the captain’s armband and has led the team impressively ever since.
He was in imperious form with seven tries from 15 appearances in the 2019/2020 season before COVID-19 ended the campaign prematurely with Pooler top of the table, with 16 wins from as many games.
The skipper reached a new level last season as he bagged 20 tries from 21 appearances, claiming the top try scorer gong, as well as Supporters’ Player of the Year, in the process.
He joined the 50-club this year and currently has 66 appearances to his name, with 39 tries.
However, his impact cannot be measured purely by tries. He never gives the opposition time to settle, is a fantastic ball-carrier and has good feet before the impact of a tackle.
He leads by example and inspires the teammates around him. He remains calm and composed when things are not going as planned to help raise the standards and get things back on track.
He is well-respected by the players and the coaches and is the perfect man to lead us back into the Premiership.
We are all behind you Scott.
