Tribute to Pooler great Roger Williams

Tuesday 05th March 2024

It is with great sadness that Pontypool RFC learned of the passing last weekend of former second-row Roger Williams.

Roger joined Pontypool from Talywain and made his debut in the 21-0 win over Weston-Super-Mare at Pontypool Park on Saturday 2nd September 1967.

His last game was against Nuneaton at the Harry Cleaver Ground on Saturday 8th December 1973 in a 25-20 victory.

Roger made around 220 appearances for Pontypool and scored 11 tries.

He made 26 appearances and scored two tries in the club’s double winning season of 1972-73 – Welsh Unofficial Champions and Welsh Merit Table Winners.

Roger was also a talented cricketer and he played for his home town club of Abertillery.

Everyone at Pontypool RFC sends their deepest sympathy and sincere condolences to Roger’s wife, Gail, the family and close friends at this very sad and difficult time.
