Mikey Herbert will lead the boys onto the field this season as he takes over the captaincy from Scott Matthews, who moves onto the club management team in his new dual playing & coaching role.

Since making his debut in September 2017, Mikey has made 92 appearances scoring 27 tries along the way.

In addition, Joel Mahoney has been appointed as Vice Captain for the forthcoming season having pulled on the jersey on 80 prior occasions.

Mikey was unveiled as captain at our recent presentation dinner where he stood in for the outgoing Matthews who was unable to attend. Mikey said ‘There’s no greater honour for me and to captain my home town club means so much to me - There are so many great names on the Captains Board! I must pay tribute to Scotty who has been, and will continue to be, an immense leader for us on and off the pitch. It will be a challenge following him however I have a lot of comfort knowing he is hugely supportive of me.

Scott added ‘As I step down from the captaincy and transition into my new chapter as player/coach, I want to reflect on the incredible journey we’ve shared over the past 5 years. It’s been an absolute honour and a privilege to lead such a great club, and I’m immensely grateful for all the support and memories that we’ve all made together.

Captaining Pontypool has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. From the high intensity matches through to the hard fought victories with the lessons learned in defeat, every moment on the field has been thoroughly enjoyable. I want to thank my teammates for their dedication and the trust they placed in me to lead them.’

Scott had a message for the Pooler army ‘To our incredible supporters, both in the stands and those behind the scenes, your passion and enthusiasm have fuelled us every step of the way home and away. I can’t thank you enough for being our 16th player!

Leighton Jones added ‘Scott has been fantastic for us as captain however he will have his hands full combining playing alongside his coaching role so the time felt right for a change. It’s yet another endorsement of the environment we’ve created here that both local lads, in Mikey & Joel, pick up the leadership reins on the field this season
