After last Saturday’s comfortable 54-10 victory at Cyncoed against the students of Cardiff Metropolitan University to retain the WRU National Championship, Pontypool take to the road again this Saturday with the short trip to the Welfare Ground for a local derby with traditional rivals and near neighbours Newbridge, kick-off 2.30pm.
This fixture goes back over 100 years with the first meeting of the two clubs taking place on 02 September 1911 at Pontypool with the home side running out winners by 2 tries to nil (6-0).
The two clubs have met on 140 occasions with Pontypool winning 89, Newbridge 42 and 9 draws. Of the 68 matches played at Newbridge, Pontypool has won 34, Newbridge 27 and there have been 7 draws.
Pontypool beat Newbridge 26-3 when the clubs last met at Pontypool Park on Saturday 30 December 2017.
Newbridge gained an excellent 34-12 bonus-point victory at Trebanos last Saturday and occupy 5th position in the WRU National Championship table with 10 wins from 18 matches and 48 league points, 2 points behind 4th placed Trebanos but have played one game more than the Swansea Valley side.
Both Newbridge and Pontypool are playing well at the moment so it promises to be a cracker of a derby game on Easter Saturday.
