League rugby takes a back seat on Saturday as Pontypool welcome the students of Cardiff Metropolitan University to Pontypool Park for a second round tie in the Specsavers WRU National Cup. The two clubs have met twice before in the competition.
The first meeting, when the students were called South Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education, took place at Cyncoed Campus on Saturday 22 January 1983, when Pontypool ran out 28-8 winners. That season, Pontypool went on to win the cup for the first, and so far, only time. It is interesting to note that the students were the only side to have scored more than one try against Pooler in the WRU Cup that season.
The second meeting was again at Cyncoed on Saturday 29 January 2011 and the students were now known as UWIC. Pontypool won a very tight game 26-23, with Pooler scoring 4 tries to the students’ 2.
Cardiff Met are a very dangerous side so Pooler must be disciplined and accurate if they are to progress in this season’s competition.
