West Mon secure Schools Cup treble

Wednesday 24th May 2023

A perfect sunny day at Pontypool Park for the Pontypool RFC Year 9 Schools Cup final brought a feast of running rugby from West Monmouth and Abersychan Schools.

A large enthusiastic crowd saw a first-half hat-trick for West Mon speedster Charlie Robinson.

Abersychan countered with a try by Connor Marley duly converted by Ollie Pearce.

The second half continued in the same vein with both sides getting the basics right before releasing their well-organised backs.

West Mon increased their advantage through Will King, Logan Leonard and Evan Williams, with the latter adding a conversion.

Alfie Haines hit back for Abersychan, and Pearce booted a second conversion, but that wasn't enough to stop West Mon taking the spoils with a 32-19 triumph.

All players showed their top talents with the MD Carpentry and Renovations Player of the Match being presented to Rudi Creel of West Monmouth School.

“A superb series of schools cup finals gave West Mon the treble," said Tony Clarke, community outreach co-ordinator for Pontypool.

"It has been a fantastic way for Peter Jeffreys and our club to showpiece the conveyor belt of young talent within Torfaen.

"My special thanks to the WRU officials, the families of all the school and club players involved, MD Carpentry and Renovations for their competition sponsorship, M & M Kitchens for their sponsorship and finally Gill Calder-Matthews, Elizabeth Clarke and Leighton Jones for their help.

"It’s been a pleasure and a real blast, many thanks one and all”.
